Becoming a job coach for the developmentally disabled can be a rewarding and fulfilling career choice.  If you enjoy helping others and working directly with people who have special needs, this could be a great career for you.  Job coaches work in developmental disabilities institutes that offer vocational training.  They work one on one with their clients or in small groups.  Job coaches provide job readiness training, help clients find suitable employment and offer on the job support to clients to help them adjust to their workplace.  As clients become more proficient at their job, the job coach spends less time on site, but continues to monitor the employee and offer the support when it is needed.

In order to work in such a field, you will need to obtain a high school diploma or GED.  You will also have to complete training programs offered by organizations. Often times, some college education is preferred and many require employees to have at least an associate’s degree in a human services field.  While a degree might not be necessary, it can give you an edge over other applicants and provide you with the basic education skills you need to help people who have developmental disabilities.

There are numerous positions in government based or private developmental disabilities institutes.  Most disability departments have websites that currently list employment opportunities. If a job coach position is not immediately available, consider applying for another position within the organization.  This will provide you with great experience in working with people with disabilities.
